Spur of the moment success
When my friends and I were the only people left in New York City
last Memorial Day weekend, we impulsively jumped in the car and headed for the closest available campsite in the Poconos at Mauch Chunk Lake. Two days of hiking, canoeing, and barbecuing in the respite of mountains, a serene lake, and some amazing waterfalls was exactly the dose of adventure we needed. It's easy to justify being too busy to take advantage of a long weekend, but the chaos and stress and speed of the city simply demands it. We realized that fun of a weekend was a short drive away and do-able anytime we need to get out and explore without planning ahead or penciling in or spending a fortune.
