It's hot everywhere and all the time in Sri Lanka. A wonderful looking beach can be hellish during mid-day because of the unfiltered sun and soaring temperatures. The host at the Freedom Lodge in Kandy suggested that I seek out a nice beach hotel with the intention of accessing their pool amenities. He lent me an older edition of a guidebook and also suggested that if I wasn’t really interested in Colombo, that I should go to Negombo, nearer to the airport. “There are plenty of hotels with pools that you stay for the day before your flight; and this town is much more relaxed than managing around the streets of Colombo,” he said. The next day I did take his advice and skipped the city entirely, spending my afternoon and evening at Jetwing Blue beach resort just 10 minutes (by tuk-tuk) from the airport.
I had a poolside lunch and drinks, then a nice dinner in their classy restaurant. There was a free cultural dance concert as the sun set for early diners and tiki torches lit for a stroll on the beach. Quite lovely!
The pool fee is 1000rps and gives you access to the private beach, showers, and restaurants.
