Jesuit College of FunchalThe Jesuit College of Funchal was founded by King Sebastian of Portugal in 1569 in support of the growing Jesuit influence over the overseas Portuguese colonies. Until the 19th century, the college and the São João Evangelista Church represented the largest building complex in Funchal. Highlights of the church's interiors are the golden carved altarpieces as well as the impressive collection of furniture and fine art.
