J.C. HoldwayFormer Blackberry Farm chef Joseph Lenn opened this downtown restaurant in 2016 as a shrine to the cuisine, farmers, and culture of Knoxville and greater Appalachia. Named after his late great-uncle, a bit of a rogue who ate at local restaurants for almost every meal of his adult life, J.C. Holdway is exactly the kind of place Uncle Joe would’ve enjoyed, with a menu full of classic Southern dishes like pimento cheese, shrimp and grits, and roasted chicken. Several dishes are cooked over an open fire, the smoke adding character to the best ingredients Lenn can source from regional farmers and purveyors. Request a table in view of the open kitchen and treat yourself to everything from wood-grilled rib eye with smoked potatoes, to whole roasted trout in lemon-thyme beurre blanc.
