For a nostalgic taste of Indonesia’s colonial days under the Dutch, take a morning to stroll through Jakarta’s Old Town. Finding street parking near the square can be difficult and walking from the nearby Jakarta Kota Metro Station can pose a challenge for first timers. Recommend having a taxi or Bajaj drive you to your destination. On the south end of the square is the Jakarta History Museum. Admission into this 18th century building is less than $2, but be aware that there’s no air conditioning inside. Portraits, furniture, and historical artifacts retell the period of Dutch colonization. Head out the courtyard in the back where snacks and souvenirs are available to purchase in the gift shop as well as take a peek into the old prison cells.
