Hanging Out With Howler Monkeys in Costa RicaWithout a doubt, one of the best experiences you can have is seeing monkeys in the wild, and Costa Rica is the place to do it. There are several species all native to Central America and in abundance in Costa Rica. So much so, that several towns there have the slogan "Still More Monkeys Than People". But to get up close and personal with - and I mean holding them as they take a break from leaping around like, well, monkeys - is so special.
And you can do this at the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo, on the country's southern Caribbean coast. Puerto Viejo has a distinct reggae vibe, a laid back lifestyle influenced by the West Indies population who settled here many years ago. The Center rescues and rehabilitates many local animals native to Costa Rica, but the monkeys are the most fun. If you're planning on a trip, email ahead of time. They always appreciate a donation of powdered goat's milk that can be difficult to get in Costa Rica.
Go! It's so much fun.
