A short 20-minute ferry ride from the southern shores of Basse Terre, Les Saintes is Guadeloupe’s crowning jewel. A cluster of nine islands, all but two of which are uninhabited, Les Saintes is the definition of natural, unspoiled Caribbean splendor. Approaching Terre-de-Haut, ferries transverse Les Saintes Bay, listed as one of UNESCO’s Most Beautiful Bays in the World. Some of the best views of the bay can be had from Fort Napoleon, which is an easy 15-to-20 minute walk from the ferry dock. Don’t depart without sampling a Tourment d’amour, a small tartlet with coconut, banana, or guava filling; according to Les Saintes lore, sailors’ wives would bake these sweet treats while waiting for their husbands to return from the sea.
