Captain Kim Strauss, whose family has made a living off these waters for generations, built the 49-passenger R.L. Gott a decade ago. He and his son, Captain Eli Strauss, offer daily cruises on East Blue Hill Bay from Bass Harbor. The scenery is unrivaled; the knowledge shared is enthralling. Opt for the morning lunch cruise, a narrated excursion to Frenchboro, one of Maine’s last islands with a year-round fishing community. Along the way, you’ll learn local lore, hear stories about the quarrying and fishing cultures, watch as lobster traps are hauled from the sea, and usually spot seals, seabirds, and eagles. After lunch on your own at Lunt’s Dockside Deli where the lobster can't come any fresher, there’s time to stroll through the village, see the one-room schoolhouse, and perhaps visit the small historical museum.
