Skip Cancun and Head to Isla Mujeres

If you're not a fan of huge resorts and big hotels, Isla Mujeres is the perfect getaway from Cancun.

Just catch the ferry to the island located 13km to the northeast of Cancun. The ferry ride in itself is enjoyable, as you float over shallow reefs and turquoise water.

Once on Isla Mujeres, I recommend staying near North Beach with its white sand and abundance of bungalow accommodations. Rent bikes and pedal around the entire island and be sure to make your way to the lighthouse crawling with iguanas.

Explore Cancun's Outer Islands

If you think that a beach can't get much more beautiful or romantic than Cancun, then hop on a boat and take a trip across the water to one of Cancun's outer islands. Isla Mujeres is a good choice. Though no longer the best-kept secret it once was, Isla Mujeres remains cleaner, chiller, and less crowded than Cancun. Just five miles long and a half mile across, the island is flat and is ringed by beaches. If you're looking for islands that are more remote and calmer still, try Isla Contoy, a wildlife and nature reserve, or Isla Holbox, both of which are north of Isla Mujeres.

Playa Norte Sunsets in This Gem of an Island

We love this little island... It's only the 12th time we visit and it does not get old. It's laid-back, friendly, authentic, relaxing, and yummie. Just a boat ride from Cancun, but don't come just for the day trip and buffet on the beach. Come to stay for a few days and get to know this little jewel. You won't find the chain bars and restaurants and the night scene from Cancun, and that is one reason we love it. But on Sunday nights on the main town plaza you will get to experience a bit of real Mexico with many families leaving church service to gather around the taco and dessert stands and enjoy their friends, surrounded by beautiful children playing.

Rent a bicycle and go around the island in a little over an hour, but it could be longer if you stop to enjoy beaches and the beautiful sculpture garden in the southern tip of the island. And don't miss a stop at Playa Lancheros to have a meal of fish Tikinxik style and a margarita with your feet in the sand.
