Iozan (Sulfur Mountain)

Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan

It’s an unforgettable experience to snack on a hard-boiled egg freshly cooked in an active volcano’s vent while watching the fumes and steam rise around you. And that’s what you’re in for on a visit to Iozan, a sulfur-spewing mountain within the eastern section of Akan National Park. Stop by the visitor center for an overview of the area’s volcanic activity, then follow easy walking paths that lead from there, around the mountain and to viewing platforms offering the best vantage points on the stinky, sulfuric action.
