Inveraray Castle

One of the most scenic day trips from Oban takes you on an impossibly pretty drive 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of town to Inveraray, a traditional county town of Argyll, and Inveraray Castle, the ancestral home of the chief of the Clan Campbell on the banks of Loch Fyne. The original castle was built for the dukes of Argyll in the 1400s, and while the current one, constructed after a fire, dates only to 1877, it’s still an impressive and dramatic sight. After touring the castle’s interiors, visit the six hectares (16 acres) of gardens and take a break for locally made cheeses, ice creams and other snacks in the Castle Tearoom.
