International Antarctic Centre

38 Orchard Road

Ever dreamed of an expedition to Antarctica? Come close during your trip to New Zealand: The Christchurch region served as the base for British explorer Robert Falcon Scott’s voyages to the South Pole in the early 20th century, and it currently functions as headquarters for U.S. missions to Antarctica. Visitors can experience the frozen continent at the International Antarctic Centre through interactive exhibits, by taking a ride on an amphibious Hagglund vehicle and meeting husky dogs and little blue penguins. Located near the Christchurch airport, the center is open year round. Plan on spending at least two hours to take in all the exhibits.
