Cultural Insadong
When it’s time to escape Seoul’s bright lights and highrises, head to Insadong. This quaint, historic neighborhood is full of winding side alleys begging to be explored. It’s also the best area to stock up on cultural souvenirs; there are dozens of stores dedicated to folk crafts, calligraphy, hanboks (traditional Korean clothing), and pottery. Of note is Ssamziegil, an open-air shopping complex with spiraling walkways and stairwells covered in graffiti that lead through eclectic boutiques and end at a rooftop garden decorated with love-themed ornaments. When hungry, duck into one of the many restaurants and tea houses lining the streets or sample treats from a street food vendor. Because of its proximity to Buddhist Jogyesa Temple, Insadong also has one of the largest concentrations of vegetarian restaurants in the city.
