Looking west to Indonesia
From this point on the highway, you can see the mountains of Indonesian West Timor. The peace and relative isolation of this scene could lead you to believe the region is uninhabited - but villages are scattered through the mountains and all available land is farmed or patrolled for wild foods. Border skirmishes still occur, although much of the tension is tribal fighting. Stories abound of raiding parties stealing solar panels and other valuable goods, crossing the border while protected by spirits or casting black magic on the neighbours to effect the raid.
