If you happen to be in the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago, up on North Broadway, you simply must make it a point to visit Independent Spirits. Residing among other boutique shops and eclectic storefronts, this gem of a wine shop is waiting to fulfill your drinking demands, no matter which way your libation cravings lean. The decor is industrial yet cozy (with a dash of steampunk - check out the shelving and light fixtures), and the growing and ever-changing wine and liquor selection is sure to please. The proprietor, Scott, has a vast knowledge of all things alcohol, and is happy to point you in the right direction for that perfect bottle of wine, pint of beer or glass of scotch. Every Thursday brings a new round of drinks, with free tastings from 4 to 7 p.m., and wine tastings on Friday at the same time. When you go, be sure to check out the various wine region paintings on the wall, and ask Scott about the local artist that possesses a hand so deft with a brush. And I'd be remiss if I didn't encourage you to sign up for their captivating newsletter, just look for the antique typewriter up front to do so. Cheers!
