Impact Activities in Puerto Plata
When's the last time you broke into an impromptu dance session while on the job? That's the norm for the extraordinary women of RePapel, a recycling co-op in Puerto Plata. Fathom’s impact activities focus on education, economic development, and the environment, and include the opportunity to work alongside the RePapel founders in transforming waste paper into materials for stationery and crafts. “I went in thinking of all the ways I can teach the community, but the women of RePapel taught me more than I could have imagined, including the value of embracing the joy in everyday activities and the gratitude that comes with trusted friendships.”

It’s at least as valuable to spend an afternoon in the el Javiar neighborhood of Puerto Plata, where you can help install a cement floor in a local home. You begin the project by mixing the concrete by hand and creating a human chain to transfer the material inside, bucket by bucket. Local masons pour and level the foundation. In just a few hours, you’ve completely transformed the foundation of a house that previously had none—and perhaps transformed yourself in the process. Curious neighborhoods kids often come out of their hiding places, shy and subtle at first, then with a playful reverence. “Even though we couldn't speak the same language, we took breaks to play universal games like paper, rock, scissors or teach each other a latest dance move,” recalls one participant.
