Igreja dos São Domingos
Another Lisbon survivor, the Baroque São Domingos Church not only stood its ground during the 1755 earthquake, but it endured a bloody anti-Semitic massacre in 1506 and a devastating fire in 1959 as well. The gorgeous and eerie cathedral, dating to 1241, bears the scars: Its interior is rife with gouged pillars; decrepit, fire-stained walls; and battered sculptures, all of which look all the more menacing and ethereal lit by a sea of lights. It feels like a house of worship in constant mourning and will leave you with a completely different feeling than most churches you'll ever visit for tourism purposes. A hard-to-spot Star of David memorial outside memorializes the 1506 Easter Slaughter deaths of more than 500 Jews, "New Christians" (newly converted Jews) and those suspected of being either.
