Now in its eighth year, Montreal’s Igloofest has become one of the city’s major winter events, drawing ten of thousands of fans of electronic music to the Old Port on weekends in January and February. Projections on walls of screens accompany the music spun by the best local and international DJs on the scene today. The festival’s Igloo Village is a highlight, with ice sculptures, an ice bar, and fire pits, while the “one-piece contest” encourages festival goers to think outside the box when it comes to the traditional snow suit. The most creative costumes, as determined in an open vote, are awarded prizes that have included music, of course, as well as cash and plane tickets. It’s one of the hottest raves in the world, in one of the chilliest locations. As one DJ put it, “It’s completely mad!”
