Santa Maria Church
The central church of Mahón sits in the heart of the city, near the harbor and the fish market. The building dates from the mid-1700s, during the time of British control. Be warned that the exterior is nondescript; you'll need to go inside to appreciate its soaring neo-Gothic details, with beautifully ribbed vaults in the nave. The church's massive organ, built in Barcelona
, is 15 meters (50 feet) wide and nine meters (30 feet) tall, with more than 3,000 sound tubes. The church holds frequent recitals in summer so visitors can hear it being played.
