Orange County exemplifies California beach culture in all its freewheeling charm—and offers up one photo op after another. I set out from Huntington Beach and, as I explored the pier, I came upon a group of teenagers messing around with their bicycles. I approached them and motioned with my camera that I’d like to take some photos; they didn’t mind a bit. The frame I captured here attracted my eye because of the contrast between light and dark. Most compact cameras have a hard time capturing such scenes, but the PowerShot G5 X struck the balance I hoped for.
