Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works

Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works

With an eerie beauty reminiscent of the Old West, the ruins of the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works lie 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Iquique, off the Pan-American Highway. Included in the collective World Heritage Site, the adjacent refineries were built in the 1870s when the area belonged to Peru. In true ghost town style, the old workers’ quarters, rusting railway locomotives and even swimming pool and theater are slowly decaying under the harsh Atacama sun.
