The newest eating experience from Will Meryick, the brainchild behind wildly successful Mama San and Sarong, Hujan Locale is the perfect addition to Ubud’s new food scene. This modern yet distinctly colonial space is much like his other restaurants, friendly, open and comfortable, a place to enjoy delicious food with friends without the stuffiness of ‘fine dining’, but also more rural, more Ubudian. It’s softer colours, more rustic feel and focus on fresh local ingredients gives it that relaxed, hippy feel of Ubud without sacrificing the flavor of the food. Expect indulgent mac & cheese, gorgeous glistening pork belly, whole barramundi and zingy curries with not a goji berries or spirulina ball in sight. Sides of herby sambals and the crunch of sweet watermelon where you wouldn’t expect it add that special something that makes dishes really unique. Drinks follow the same idea of using fresh herbs, fruit and roots to create classic cocktails with extra punch. The Tropical Mule was bursting with ginger and icy cold, just how I like it. This will definitely become a firm favourite in Ubud, so book in advance to avoid being turned away at the door.
