Twenty minutes from Trujillo sits the beach town of Huanchaco, home to the famous caballitos de totora. Believed to date back 3,000 years, these wave-riding vessels fashioned from reed are still in use by local fisherfolk, whose forebears (some argue) were among the world’s first proto-surfers. Either way, the boats make for a beautiful spectacle, whether they’re at work or lined up in curvaceous rows along the shore.
