Escaping the tourist route...
So close to Chiang Mai and yet a million miles from the dread-locked backpacker posse fighting to stay on their raft whilst carrying an elephant with a Hmong villager clinging onto their ankle for dear life... this place is the perfect retreat for the afternoon or whole day if you really want to kick back and relax and be the only farang around. With the backdrop of the Suthep mountain range this mis-shaped reservoir has dozens of little Thai restaurants dotted around it with straw roofed pontoons for you to chill out on, take a book, your camera and you can lose hours, food is traditional Thai not tourist Thai, you get a big bucket of ice so that beer will never get warm and its cheap. Nice rides around it and if you have an off road motorbike then you can go exploring off one of the many tracks.
