Herdwick at Howtown, Lakeland
I took this photo at Howtown, just above Lake Ullswater, whilst researching my book A Lake District Journey. I discovered that this rare native breed was created through selective breeding by shepherds around wild and remote Wasdale. Wasdale is the centre of the British rock-climbing scene and has been for well over 100 years now. If you get to the Lakes, make sure you visit Howtown and Wasdale, they are unmissable.
