House of Memories serves up some of Yangon’s tastiest dishes. With an affordable menu, good services and an easy location (5 min. drive from Shwedagon) it’s easy to see why HOM is both a lunch and dinner favorite. Though Thai food is now available, classic Burmese dishes like pork with mango curry and chicken Kachin chet are really what the restaurant does best.
HOM occupies an exquisite 100-year-old teak colonial style mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens. Once used as the BIA (Burma Independence Army) and BDA (Burma Defense Army) headquarters, the building is where Myanmar’s independence movement was hatched, spearheaded by General Aung San. Historic remnants are still on display, including the General’s former desk and typewriter. Considered by its current owners to be a ‘living museum,’ the building is as a wonderful example of architectural preservation gone right.
