Animal Aware Shelter, Guatemala
"Hound Heights" is a large ranch nestled in the woods off the Pan American Highway just 30 minutes away from Antigua. The Animal Aware shelter (Animal Welfare Association: Rescue and Education) is directed by the founder, Xenii Nielsen. At the time of my visit, the shelter held 319 rescued dogs and 81 cats. Animal Aware is known as the largest No Kill shelter in all of Central America. The shelter runs low-cost spay/neuter campaigns, educational outreach and offers rescued dogs up for adoption. Volunteers come from all over the world to help feed and walk the dogs, which can be both challenging and fun considering the dogs love to run up in the hills. To volunteer or donate:
