Hotel Sacher Salzburg
Salzburg’s grand dame perched on the banks of the Salzach river drips with Old World charm and Austrian tradition -- but with a graceful tip of the hat to modernity. Grandeur abounds; the interiors brim with antiques, crystal chandeliers, fine art, and a traditional style that feels transportive. Many of the guest rooms were refurbished in 2016 for the hotel’s 150th anniversary, and expertly marry old-fashioned elegance with a modern touch; luxe textiles and antiques or reproductions go hand-in-hand with flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and iPod docks, while marble bathrooms are stocked with the hotel’s own line of, fittingly, chocolate-scented toiletries. A stay here is incomplete without a slice of the legendary eponymous cake, served with a generous dollop of whipped cream in the hotel’s elegant, atmospheric café. Dining is a highlight at the hotel, ranging from refined rustic Austrian fare in the oak-paneled and antler-festooned Zirbelzimmer Restaurant, to grilled meats and fish at the folksy Salzachgrill, while the intimate and den-like bar spills out onto a riverside terrace.
