A family-style welcome in Gothenburg's oldest hotel
The Hotel Royal is the oldest hotel in Gothenburg, and one of the most welcoming I've visited anywhere. Located in the very heart of the city, access to all of the locations my husband and I wanted to see was easy.
The comfortable hotel lounge is a delightful place to read, and to enjoy complimentary cakes, tea and coffee in keeping with the Swedish "fika" tradition. The breakfast buffet was generous, with pots of jam and herring, wonderful breads, in addition to cheeses, eggs and cured meats.
Elegant period touches reminded us of the building's origins: steel beams and railings on the steps are original, beautiful work from the time of the hotel's opening in 1852. Our room on the top floor had dormer windows with little pots of orchids to catch the morning light.
There is nothing stuffy about the place, though: modern comforts and friendly, attentive staff make this a hotel worth returning to. The hotel's understated entrance is just the beginning of a fine stay in Gothenburg!
