Hotel Post Bezau & Susanne Kaufmann SpaThe signpost hanging out front has the date 1830 written on it and speaks to the long history of this spa hotel. What started as an inn for postal coach passengers in the wooded Bregenzerwald region of Austria's western Vorarlberg province has now been managed and owned by the Kaufmann family for five generations. One look at the hotel, however, and you'll realize it has come a long way since its nineteenth-century roots. One of Austria's leading architects, Oskar Leo Kaufmann (who also happens to be the brother of the hotel manager), has designed new additions in stone and wood. They embody the clean, contemporary style that is typical of the most interesting new architecture in the Bregenzerwald region.
One element in the hotel's gradual expansion is the Susanne Kaufmann Spa which opened fifteen years ago with saunas, salt-water pools, and a whirlpool. The spa menu includes traditional Chinese medicine treatments. Guests taking advantage of a full range of year-round sports activities, from tennis and fishing to skiing and sledding, will appreciate dining options from gourmet to detox ones that all incorporate local sustainable ingredients.
