The review: Opened in 2018, this hotel pairs cool and coastal elegance. The Joaquin’s creator, Paul Makarechian, was a local Orange County kid and has now brought his hotelier acumen home (he masterminded Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs, as well as other petite resorts of his Auric Road collection).
Studio Robert McKinley designed the Joaquin, blending elements from St Bart’s, midcentury SoCal beach culture and the chic aesthetic of the Mediterranean coast. Expect curated artwork and one-of-a-kind vintage finds. Light floods the guest rooms, some of which have balconies and private patios (book La Vue for the hotel’s only picture window, framing views of the ocean and Catalina Island). Each room has a working record player, so fire up those old Serge Gainsbourg albums from the hotel’s library! They’re also stocked with Anichini linens, Le Labo products and artisanal snacks curated by Farm to People. The bathrooms pull out the boho stops with imported marble, hand-painted tiles and brass fixtures.
The hotel’s menu helps guest stay paparazzi-perfect with complimentary smoothies and light breakfasts, including house-cured salmon and Rawnola with blue-spirulina-enhanced almond milk. Move on to more elaborate fare later in the day, such as charred artichoke, octopus carpaccio, and crab gnocchi with aged cheddar and macadamia nuts. Middle Eastern spices and flavors enliven Saline restaurant at every turn. Adult-beverage fans shouldn’t miss the Kelpfest cocktail, featuring Oakland Spirits Company’s briny Automatic Sea-Gin (using sustainably foraged nori seaweed), brandy, lime, cucumber shrub and garam masala.
Note: you must be over 21 to reserve a room and at least 18 to stay at the Joaquin. Service animals only.
