The historic Hotel Galvez rises next to the sea in Galveston on the Gulf of Mexico. The hotel can boast of three presidents who have checked in (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Franklin D. Roosevelt). There was also one more infamous guest in the hotel’s past: Audra, a young woman who stayed at the Galvez waiting for her fiancé to return from sea. When she was received a telegram that his ship had sunk, she killed herself in the bathroom of room 501 (often requested by guests hoping for a spectral sighting). Guests have reported everything from slamming doors, not just in room 501 but throughout the fifth floor, to a more elegant calling card — a mysterious scent of gardenias.
