Ho’okipa Beach Park
One of Maui’s top spots for lounging and ocean sports, this park stands at milemarker #9 on the Hana Highway
. It shelters a jaw-dropping sweep of sugar-white sand, churned by epic waves perfect for both surfing and windsurfing. Don’t venture into the water unless you’re an expert and welcomed by locals—the area’s notorious for strong rip currents, a shallow reef, and quick-building afternoon winds. (Kanaha Beach
is a better bet for noobs.) Ho’okipa does deliver on the tidepools, however, and often has honu
(Hawaiian green sea turtles) lazing on the shore under the lookout cliff. As the name implies, it’s a great vantage point to watch surfers tackle the furthest east break, called Pavilions.
