STAY: Experience Aloha in Honokeana CovePeople define Aloha in many different ways. I think of Aloha as a state of peacefulness that comes from an appreciation for the beauty and fragility of life, combined with compassion and respect for the people and creatures we live among. When I feel Aloha, I want to stay, savor it, and nurture that feeling. A strong sense of Aloha came over me when snorkeling at Honokeana cove this past February.
Honokeana is a quiet little cove just south of Napili beach on the west coast of Maui. To get to the cove, I followed the footpath from the condominium parking lot, between the buildings and down to the cove.
Not long after entering the water, I looked to my left and saw a large Green Sea Turtle. The turtle looked directly at me for a short while and then turned back to nibbling at various bits of food among the lava rocks and coral. For what seemed like an extraordinarily long time, the turtle allowed me to stay. It was a relaxed and peaceful experience just being with this great creature and listening to the distant songs of humpback whales and the crackling of fish nibbling at the coral.
After a while I decided to give the turtle some space and explore some other areas within the cove. On my way back to shore I stopped by the point where I had met the turtle and to my surprise it was still there. I stayed with the turtle for a little longer and then headed out of the water. Aloha!
