Hominy GrillFor those seeking a true taste of Charleston, it’s hard to recommend anywhere better than Hominy Grill. You’ll likely have to wait for a table, but just grab a drink in the front courtyard until it’s your turn to sit. Meals include fried chicken, smoked ribs, and Charleston classics like she-crab soup and shrimp and grits. The kitchen introduced some new dishes to the menu to keep things fresh, including a slow-smoked pork belly grit bowl, topped with an egg, that have brought raves.

Top of the list for Charleston eats is The Hominy Grill. Hungry patrons can start off the 30+ minute wait for a table with a mimosa, Bloody Mary, or other signature drinks from the Bar/ToGo window in the front courtyard. I recommend also ordering the pumpkin spice bread. The menu includes uniquely named and deliciously described dishes (with or without cheesy grits) such as fried chicken on a biscuit with sausage gravy, a.k.a. The Big Nasty (pictured), salmon cakes, and pork shoulder with sweet potato hash. The food is great and relatively inexpensive, hence the problem with parking. They only seat complete parties, accommodating big and little kids alike. Groups larger than 8 can be taken, but expect to wait a bit longer during busy brunch times. The two restrooms are top to bottom white honeycomb tile and spectacularly clean, a huge plus for this foodie. This little detail along with the fresh flowers in mason jars eclipses the inconveniences of parking and the 30 minute wait, earning The Hominy Grill an A+.

Southern Cooking in the Holy City
This culinary gem is by no means a state secret, Anthony Bourdain has brought his travel show to this fine location, but its one of those places where you must go for yourself to see if the hype is true. There is nothing light in Southern cooking, so you may want to plan on salads for the rest of your trip.
