Holy Ascension of Our Lord Cathedral
This splendid 1896 church rises into an onion-dome spire containing six bells (the seventh is cracked and awaiting repairs). Visitors can savor the long mural and 16th-century Russian icons, which were evacuated when the congregants were sent to WWII internment camps. As the badly stored artwork began to mold, the custodians panicked and applied cooking oil, then later shellac, to them. The damaged works each take professional conservators six to nine months to restore—a process that happily is well under way.
