This mountain village—high in Kona coffee country on the slope of Hualalai volcano—has become an art enclave. Its brightly painted, tin-roofed plantation shacks center around the two-lane Mamalahoa Highway. Browse galleries dedicated to ukuleles, fine art and traditional ipu (decorative gourds). Make sure to check out the hot-pink clapboard Kona Hotel, which dates to 1926, and the town's new tile mural at Holualoa Elementary School, depicting joyful hula dancers and taiko drummers.
