I hitch hiked from Cape Town in South Africa to Mombasa in Kenya and back again. I had almost no money and it was on this "expedition" that I learned the true nature of desperation and the kindness of strangers. Living day to day not knowing where I was going to sleep, what I was going to eat or when my next shower was going to come along, tested me in ways I never knew possible. I came to see people as exactly that, just people with everyday needs, living out ordinary lives. If you ever want to find out that common humanity that resides within us all, then travel and do it without reserve, put yourself on the edge and risk it all, you'll never feel closer to life than during that time.
