George Town

George Town, founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its unique architecture. The Pinang Peranakan Mansion, now a museum, is the former home of a wealthy Peranakan family and is filled with exquisite furnishings. The Reclining Buddha Temple dates to 1845 and houses a 33-meter-long (108-foot-long) gold-plated Buddha. The Penang State Museum and Art Gallery, in a Gothic revival building that was once a school, covers the city's rich history through photographs, artifacts and maps.
