Ucumari National Park
Hiking with Hummingbirds & Wax Palms
Cocora Valley - or Valle de Cocora en Espanol - is a great hiking destination in the department of Quindío in Colombia. It's in the Central Cordillera and is part of the Los Nevados National Natural Park. It is the principal location of the national tree and symbol of Colombia, the Quindío Wax Palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense), which is enormously tall! There are bromeliads and orchids festooned to every tree, especially where the trail gets close to the creek. At the end of the hike is a quaint, family-run coffee (of course) stand with hummingbird feeders. So many species of hummers dote on the feeders, buzzing in all directions! Colombia has seemingly endless cloud forest destinations. Naturalists: If you liked Ecuador and Costa Rica, you will be amazed at Colombia! (But please don't tell everyone you know, because it's not overrun by tourists yet.)
