Hike to the Top of La Soufrière
If hiking a volcano ranks high on your travel wish list, book your ticket to Guadeloupe, stat. In the national park on Basse Terre—the most lush and tropical of Guadeloupe’s islands—looms La Soufrière, with a summit elevation of more than 4,800 feet. The moderate-to-difficult hike takes about four-and-a-half hours and is best navigated with good trail shoes and light rain gear; the rocky path to the summit is often shrouded in swirling clouds and a sulphury mist that will part to reveal awe-inspiring views of land and sea. Download hiking app Rando Guadeloupe for English-language trail guides, and pack your swimsuit: A dip into Les Bains Jaunes, the hot spring by the trailhead, is a refreshing post-hike reward.
