Hike from Fira to Oia
Santorini may be overrun with cruise ships, honeymooners, plunge pools, and selfie sticks, but there are still places where you can marvel at the intense otherworldly landscape in peace. A dizzying 5.5-mile footpath follows the contours of the red, green, and black cliffs that plunge into the caldera—the flooded volcanic crater—all the way from the capital, Fira, to the much-photographed village of Oia on the island’s southern tip. This gentle hike takes about three hours, though it’s worth stopping at Skaros, the ruins of a medieval citadel on an outcrop of rock. Time your walk to reach Oia just before sunset, and enjoy the showstopping views without the crowds.
