This wasn't just some luau. The locals take pride in their history and their story and it was completely evident at the Highland Paradise Cultural Show and Dinner. First, your guide will drive you up into the mountains where the original locals lived (the people-eating locals of old). You are assigned a "tribe" and your appointed "chief" partakes in a traditional ceremony. After the ceremony on sacred grounds, they serve a traditional feast and the dancing begins. But, like I said, it's not just about the dance. The dance simply helps illustrate the history of the island. It was very educational and full of color and life. Tip: There is also another cultural show (the over-water tour), but it is not in the original village. Also, Highland Paradise has won Air New Zealand's Tourism Award year after year.
