Chamois in the High Tatras
My husband and I spent several days hiking in the High Tatras mountain range in Slovakia, spending nights in a dorm room in a chata. Stunning vistas, unique “trails,” (i.e. scaling a rock face via chains bolted into the rock) and the unexpected pleasure of beer on tap in the evenings, I thought it had been a perfect few days. We left for home (our car) very early in the morning; we were the only hikers on the trail. I looked up in the crisp silence to see this mother chamois and her baby scampering across the rocks. We stood still for 15 minutes and watched the baby frolic on sheer cliff faces and the mother check up on him from time to time, until they finally disappeared over the ridge. It was a supreme icing on an already awesome cake.
