Higashiya Ginza

Japan, 〒104-0061 Tōkyō-to, Chuo City, Ginza, 1-chōme−7−7 ポーラ銀座ビル2階

Wagashi are confections served in traditional tea ceremonies to evoke nature and the seasons. Try searching for videos of wagashi and you’ll find that it is a handmade art that requires one to be gentle and swift at the same time. Higashiya Ginza is founded by Shinichiro Ogata, owner of an established design studio in Japan. His intent was to create a modern space where one can enjoy these delicate treats with tea as part of everyday life. At Higashiya Ginza, you can order wagashi in the tea room or have them packaged in beautiful boxes to take home. Daifuku, mochi rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste are not to miss. My favorites are higashi, coin-sized cookies made by pressing ultra-fine sugar and flour into intricately carved wood molds. The cookie melts as soon as it touches the tip of the tongue. The faint sweetness perfectly compliments any cup of vibrant green tea. Speaking of teas, there are at least 30 varieties to choose from, so make sure you have plenty of time for tasting and choosing.
