Higashi Chaya District

Higashi Chaya District

The Japanese word chaya means teahouse, and this neighborhood in the eastern part of Kanazawa is the largest of three such districts in the city. Many of them date back to the Edo period and were used by geisha to entertain their guests with song, dance and traditional tea ceremonies. Several are still used by geisha, but others have been converted into cafés, restaurants and boutiques. It's a picturesque and atmospheric neighborhood where you can shop for everything from ice cream to kimonos and traditional Japanese souvenirs.
