Heroes’ Square (Hösök Tere)

Budapest, Hősök tere, 1146 Hungary

One of Budapest‘s most history-laden spots, the enormous Heroes’ Square is framed by art museums near the City Park. But the main focal point here is Millennium Memorial, a tall column and colonnade structure completed in 1905 that commemorates the Hungarian conquering of the area a thousand years before (hence the name) and the founding of Hungary in 1896. The statues decorating the memorial depict the seven chieftains of the Magyars, and the figure atop the column is the archangel Gabriel. Fun fact: The first underground subway in continental Europe, built in 1896, terminated here. Be sure to visit at night because the square is even more majestic when lit up.

Museums, Parks, and Concerts in Heroes' Square, Budapest

Director Paul Feig found plenty to do in Heroes’ Square. His long walks around Budapest, where he lived for six months while working on his 2015 film, Spy, ended at the square, where he found museums, public parks, and fun concerts.

Heroes’ Square

On a night walk around Budapest, I followed the sounds of music into City Park. It was my first night in Budapest and didn’t realize that some sort of music festival was going on. After listening to a number of different musicians and musical groups I started walking back to my hotel for the night. As I was exiting the park, I looked up and Heroes Square looked almost magical in the way it was illuminated. I stopped on the bridge between City Park and Heroes Square and took this picture.

Look! It's a pony! - Budapest, Hungary

The road to Heros’s Square usually closed for weekend actives, such as food tent or craft shops. On the garden side, kids can have the opportunity to ride the ponies.

Heroes Square, Hungary

Heroes Square is one of the major square in Budapest, Hungary. The real part of the square are statues of the leaders of the seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century and other outstanding figures of Hungarian history. The statues are positioned in a semi-circular arcades. However, as a photographer, you try to find different angles and perspectives and this image captures the pattern of the square which haven’t been explored in my previous pictures of the square.
