When Heartland Restaurant moved from their inaugural digs in a St. Paul neighborhood to a rehabbed vintage building on the edge of downtown, referred to as Lowertown, it was hard to believe they would fill the cavernous space. But the beautifully remodeled bar and equally elegant dining room seem to fill up nicely even on sub-zero winter nights. The well-designed space manages to be both soaring and intimate. The chef, Lenny Russo, creates a new menu every day (you can find it online around 1:00 pm daily) from locally sourced and/or the best available ingredients. The fact that Russo is a multiple finalist for the James Beard Award is a testament to his longterm commitment to creating exceptional food. The attached market is a perfect place for buying cheeses, meats, fish and seasonal produce. I've never come away from a meal at Heartland dissatisfied.
