Fly Over the Great Barrier Reef
You can’t appreciate the sheer size of the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living thing on Earth, until you see it from above. It covers more than 348,000 square kilometers (134,000 square miles) and shelters some 1,500 fish species and 400 types of coral. From a helicopter, it looks like an intricate network of bacteria stretching north and south along the continental shelf. Within the pattern, there’s a familiar shape: Heart Reef, the inspiration for many a marriage proposal.
