Summer is worth celebrating, even if it's hard to remember that in the dreadful mugginess of August. Japanese festivals or matsuri have so many delicious treats to go with your Asahi or chuhai as you take in a mikoshi parade.

Kakigori — shaved ice with colorful syrups
Yakitori — grilled meats on sticks
Ikayaki — grilled squid
Yakisoba — stir-fried noodles with cabbage in a sweet, heavy sauce
Takoyaki — octopus balls topped with pickled ginger, bonito flakes, mayo and green onions
Okonomiyaki — cabbage pancake with a variety of fillings and toppings
Karaage — ubiquitous and irresistible fried chicken
Chocolate-covered bananas with sprinkles
Taiyaki — fish-shaped pastries filled with sweet bean paste
